Overview

This hands-on session introduces JutulDarcy.jl, a high-performance porous media and reservoir simulator based on automatic differentiation.

Duration: 60 minutes

Abstract

Subsurface flow and transport processes are central to many geoscientific applications, including hydrocarbon recovery, carbon capture and sequestration, geothermal energy, and groundwater flow. JutulDarcy.jl is a fully differentiable, high-performance simulator toolbox that allows for both custom simulations written as script, and industry standard input formats.

Outline

  1. Installation of the software and access to documentation
  2. A brief overview on subsurface flow
  3. Running your first JutulDarcy simulation
  4. Example: Geothermal data assimilation & optimization

Instructor Bio

Olav Møyner is a Senior Research Scientist in the Applied Computational Sciences group at SINTEF Digital, a not-for-profit independent research institute in Norway.

Research interests include:

  • Solution methods for coupled, nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs)
  • Automatic differentiation and adjoint methods
  • Software design of industry-grade simulators
  • Flow and transport in porous media, with applications in hydrocarbon recovery, carbon capture and sequestration, geothermal energy, and groundwater flow
  • Numerical simulation of batteries
  • Discretizations for unstructured meshes (high-order and consistent schemes)

Materials and Instructions

See the JutulDarcy documentation and in particular the getting started section. Installation before the session starts may save some time. All examples used in the session can be downloaded from the examples source directory and published versions with recorded output can be viewed online.
